Christian Service
There are a variety of programs and organizations at St. Gerard Majella Parish that seek to serve the needs of others. While “Christian Service” is a call to all members of the church, there is a group, the “Christian Service Committee” that meets to organize the activities of the parish organizations that care for others. Give-A-Meal-A-Month Program
Recognizing the social needs of the greater community outside our parish, our members provide food on a regular basis the year round. The Give-A-Meal-A-Month Program provides an easy, convenient, low cost (about $5.00) way to provide food on a personal basis to the poor and hungry through the Food Pantry of St. Cronan's Church on South Boyle. A suggested balanced meal menu and a yellow bag is provided each month for you to contribute on the 2nd Sunday of every month at all the Masses. The St. Vincent DePaul Society sponsors this program.
Helping Hands
A group of parishioners who have said "Yes" to helping others in our Christian Community of St. Gerard Majella. Their function is to assist primarily with meals for families or individuals in times of stress such as illness and/or funeral gatherings. We occasionally need volunteers to help with funeral lunches.
Pastoral Care
Connecting people with people. Are you hospitalized or homebound? Impaired by old age? Are you awaiting surgery? Do you or someone you know need prayers? Are you in a nursing home? Do you struggle with daily living? Do you need help with meals? Do you need temporary assistance with home repairs? Call the Parish Office, and we will put you in contact with someone who can help you through difficult times.
Pro-Life Committee
The principal responsibilities of the Pro-Life committee are to organize and educate the parish community for the purpose of restoring and maintaining respect for all human life.
Saint Patrick Center Casserole Volunteers
A group of volunteers from the parish bake casseroles 15 times a year for the benefit of the homeless at St. Patrick's center downtown.
Saint Vincent De Paul Society
The St. Vincent De Paul Society assists the parish community in fulfilling the mandate of Christ to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and shelter the homeless. It provides assistance with utilities, rent, food, medicine, etc., for parishioners and others in need.
Frozen Food Dinner Project
This program is to provide meals for a family or senior citizen. Containers for this program are purchased from money made through the recycling program. Containers are available in the vestibule the first Sunday of the month.
Participants take a container home, place freezable donations in the container, freeze them, and return the full container on the third weekend of the month. These donations go to help the pantries of Holy Trinity, Perpetual Help, Holy Trinity Parish in St. Louis County, and Hosea House.
Sandwich Making for the Homeless
Sandwich making occurs on the third Saturday of the month, after the 5:00 pm Mass, in the Gold Room. Sandwiches are delivered to St. Peter and Paul Homeless Program and Hosea House.
Newspaper and Aluminum Recycle Program
The Committee assists the Parish in achieving that portion of its mission related to helping others – often referred to as “Outreach”. It directs, co-ordinates and actively participates in “Outreach” work. To help fund these efforts the Committee sponsors the recycling of newspapers and aluminum cans – trash for cash. All Parish members are encouraged to bring their newspapers and aluminum cans to the bins located at the Ballas parking lot exit. Good use will be made of the resulting cash.
Neighbor to Neighbor Program
We are men, women, and children of the parish who are willing and able to assist those needing immediate and temporary help, such as repair a faucet, remove a fallen tree limb, or paint a room for those in the immediate area of the parish. We will not be able to do daily or weekly tasks, such as dishes, or cutting the grass, but there may be a possibility finding someone to help out with those. SGM Job Search
This ministry seeks to assist those considering a job change or those looking for a new job with the mechanics of a job search process while helping the individual seek God’s comfort and direction during the search.
Meetings are held the second and fourth Thursdays of each month and is open to parishioners and others. Volunteers to assist with this ministry are also needed.
